Meditation on Transience

Now, at the end of this chapter, followed by a guided meditation, in which you can apply what you have learned so far.

Ninefold purification breathing

Bring your attention to the middle of your body where the three channels are. These are more open. Be aware of this openness and continue to focus your attention on this openness.

Below the navel to the crown, this part of your body is more open and shining. Be aware that this is like a being of light. (45 Sek)

Again take the body's five-fold meditation position. Then think about your own existential situation in the world. Think about the fact that all conditional things are transient. (30 sec)

Whatever you have made or created, everything will eventually disintegrate again. Whatever you saved, you will eventually lose again. Nothing is eternal because all things are conditioned by causes. In making an investigation of everything, you will find that all things are transient, including your own physical body. It is a misconception to think that you are going on living without dying. (30 sec)

Although you do not know the hour of your own death, it is certain that you will eventually die. Therefore, you should not postpone the practice to tomorrow, because the Lord of Death can intervene at any time. You now have to decide what is really important and useful and what is just annoying and superfluous. You will not be able to take your possessions into the Bardo when you die. (30 sec)

Before this present life you have wandered without meaning in the course of countless deaths and rebirths in Samsara. But you have found neither happiness nor contentment. Illness, suffering, frustration and anxiety have been experienced throughout this past lives. In each of them, you were born, grew old, fell ill and died. So what? You are only born again to die once more. So how do you think that the present life will last forever? (30 sec)

Think about how many others have died before your present time and are no longer visible. They used to be alive and full of life like you are now, but now they are all gone. You should think carefully about this fact. These too were attracted to worldly life as if it were something lasting. (30 sec)

Moreover, consider all those others who have fallen into poverty and misery after having once enjoyed great wealth and power. (30 sec)

You should look at how friends have become enemies and how enemies have become friends. (30 sec)

Everything changes from moment to moment, nothing stays the same. Therefore, apart from refuge, there is nothing in this world that you can fully trust. Therefore you should not cling to the things of earthly life and rely on them. Just watch the seasons change all the time. Your own life has changed too from birth to childhood, from adolescence to adulthood. The middle years are followed by age, illness and finally death. Although you do not know how and when you will die, death is certain. (30 sec)

One can postpone death with medication and hospital technologies, but there is no escape from it. All living beings born in the past have finally died. From the beginning to the present, there were no living beings that did not die. Even the Buddhas and the great saints have passed away. You should think about it well. (30 sec)

And next time, it is not even certain that you will be born again as a human, or that you may be born again as an animal or a restless spirit. But a human existence is much better than the other possibilities of rebirth, as it offers the maximum opportunity for the practice of spiritual teachings. Therefore, you should not waste this unique opportunity and postpone the practice to tomorrow or one of your next lives. This precious human body or existence represents a unique opportunity for entry on the spiritual path to ultimately achieve liberation and enlightenment. Thus, by possessing certain unique qualities, a human existence is more beneficial and conducive to the process of enlightenment than other types of existence, even among the Devas and the Asuras. Prayer for the meditation on transience

Kye-ma! (Oh, alas!)

(1) Accordingly, although all the phenomena of samsara are without essences,
However, I still understand it as objectively real.
Oh, compassion! May the blessing for the recognition of transience arise in my mind stream!

(2) Even if this luck hardly lasts for a short time or a moment,
I hope that it appears again and again.
Oh, compassion! May the blessing for the recognition of transience arise in my mind stream!

(3) Although I keep wandering in Samsara, I'm still not tired of all this;
I am so stupid and without courage.
Oh, compassion! May the blessing for the recognition of transience arise in my mind stream!

(4) Because my actions within Samsara are without luck,
I feel depressed and without awareness.
Oh, compassion! May the blessing for the recognition of transience arise in my mind stream!

(

(5) Even if I shift everything in my present life without adding anything,
I still hope that this life will always go on.
Oh, compassion! May the blessing for the recognition of transience arise in my mind stream!

(6) Even though the time will come from my death, I will not be accompanied by anyone,
But I always hope that this will not happen.
Oh, compassion! May the blessing for the recognition of transience arise in my mind stream!

(7) Although death, in addition to the general passing of time, is definite in all respects,
Nevertheless, I expect, without death, to live on and on.
Oh, compassion! May the blessing for the recognition of transience arise in my mind stream!

(8) Accordingly, each of us sees, hears and knows about the coming of death,
But I always expect that this self will be eternal.
Oh, compassion! May the blessing for the recognition of transience arise in my mind stream!

(9) Accordingly, I know that all phenomena are constantly changing,
But I always hope that they are one and identical with the self.
Oh, compassion! May the blessing for the recognition of transience arise in my mind stream!

(10) When I think about death and transitoriness, I am at this moment without distractions,
But I became lazy and then I postponed everything.
Oh, compassion! May the blessing for the recognition of transience arise in my mind stream!

(11) Even though it is not certain when I will die and find myself in a corpse's condition
Nevertheless, I leave everything without hesitation and do what I like.
Oh, compassion! May the blessing for the recognition of transience arise in my mind stream!

(

12) Although everyone has only one safe way to go,
Nevertheless, I hope to be free from this inevitable fate.
Oh, compassion! May the blessing for the recognition of transience arise in my mind stream!

May I receive the blessing of remaining alert to death!
May I receive the blessing to turn away from the depths of the attachments!
May I receive the blessing of not generating desire in my mind-stream!
May I receive the blessing of understanding that everything is an illusion!

Dedication

(ngo mon)
GO SUM DAK PE GE WA GANG GYI PA
KHAM SUM SEM CHEN NAM KYI DÖN DU NGO
DUK SUM SAK PE LE DRIP KÜN JANG NE

All pure virtue done through the three doors,
I dedicate to the welfare of all sentient beings of the three realms.
Having purified all afflictions and obscurations of the three poisons,
May we swiftly achieve the complete Buddhahood of the three bodies.

Dedication prayer
