Meditation for the Mandala Gifts

Prayer of Guru Yoga

LA MA NAL JOR (bla ma’i rnal ’byor)

CHI TSUK DE WA
CHEN PÖ PO DRANG

DU DRIN CHEN TSA WE
LA MA LA SOL WA

DEB SANG GYE SEM SU
TÖN PA RIN PO

CHE RANG NGO RANG GI
SHE PAR JIN GYI LOP

In the palace of great bliss on the top of my head,
If you are, my kind root-Lama, I pray to you.
Precious, grant me your blessing,
So that I recognize my own true nature as a Buddha.

Ninefold purification breathing

Bring your attention to the middle of your body where the three channels are. These are more open. Be aware of this openness and continue to focus your attention on this openness.

Below the navel to the crown, this part of your body is more open and shining. Be aware that this is like a being of light. (45 sec)

Meditation Posture

As with the other preparatory exercises, in the practice of Mandala Offering, we are always in the right meditation posture.

Visualizations and Recitations

As in the visualization of the practice of refuge, we turn the ordinary place where we are into a beautiful land of great, auspicious trees, a river of nectar, seven treasures, eight symbols of fortune, and so on. We visualize our root Lama in the form of Shen Lha Ökar, the Enlightened of Compassion sitting on a jeweled throne with a sun and moon pillow, along with all the highest objects of refuge, just as described in the first preparatory practice.

If we use a Mandala plate, we hold it in the left hand. We clean it with the palm of your right hand. We wipe the Mandala plate three times counterclockwise, three times clockwise and three times straight away. Thereby we imagine that we purify the negative karmic traces and the impurities of the universe. We speak the prayer of purification of impurities:

BÖN NYID YE NE NAM PAR DAG PA ZHIN
As pure as the nature of Bön from the beginning,

SEM NYID DE ZHIN NAM PAR DAG PA TE
So the nature of the mind is perfectly pure as it is.

BAG CHAG DIG PA MA LÜ SAL WE CHIR
To cleanse all karmic traces and impurities,

SAL WE MANDAL YONG SU CHI WAR JA WO
We purify the perfect Mandala.

NA MA A KAR SHA YA NI SHAG SA LE SANG NGE YE SO HA
CHOD PHUR SA LE HA LO SANG

We still hold the Mandala in the left hand, take the mandala gifts that we have prepared, such as flowers, rice, barley, corn, and so on, with your right hand side up. We let the contents of the right hand trickle down to form a border around the edge of the base of the Mandala and imagine that this is an open expanse of golden earth.

Then we take the Mandala gifts back in the right hand; place a handful in the middle of the Mandala and say: «DRUM RI TI GAR MA LA HO. This is Mount Meru». We imagine that we are building a complete universe with seven golden mountains, seven seas, and so on around Mount Meru.

The side to you, at your wrist, is the east. The starting point is in an easterly direction. We build the existing world from the offerings in the eastern, northern, western and southern directions of the Mandala. As we do this, we recite:

AH YANG RAM MANG KHANG SHAG SA LE SANG NGE SO HA

The four worlds of Mount Meru are as follows:

The color of the eastern world is white and its shape is a crescent. The precious symbol of this world is a vase full of treasures.

The color of the northern world is green and its shape is a square. The precious symbol of this world is a tree with a fruit that provides the perfect food for all.

The color of the western world is red and its shape is a circle. The precious symbol of this world is a cow that gives endless milk and fulfills every wish.

The southern world is the world in which we live. The color of the southern world is blue and its shape is that of a human scapula. The precious symbol of this world is a precious jewel.

These are the four colors, four shapes and four symbols, assigned to the worlds in the four directions around Mount Meru.

The next step in the Mandala offering is to build the eight continents around the world. Each direction is connected to two continents located on the right and left sides (of the previous worlds). We recite:

AH YAM RAM MAM KHAM SHAG SA LE SANG NGE SO HA

To the right and to the left of the east are Koring and Kotung, to the right and to the left of the north are Gyagti and Gyogti, to the right and to the left of the west are Marzhi and Tengzhi and to the right and left of the south are Khalon and Telgyum.

We will recite next:

CHÖD PHUR SA LE HA LO SENG

We add additions to the eight continents and the four directions as follows:

The golden sun in the east; in the north the seven gems; in the west the white moon, and in the south the eight symbols of happiness. Then we put the extra gifts on the Mandala.. We build the Mandala step by step on three rings that allow more offerings to complete the Mandala.

In this universe we have created, we imagine offering the most beautiful forms, the most beautiful sounds and smells, the most delicious taste, the most cuddly fabrics, the most beautiful ornaments and the limitless treasures of the divine and human spheres, whatever there are also, like a mountain of gemstones, auspicious diamonds, a forest of medicines, fields of well grown plants and even one's own life and happiness, our joys and pleasures, our retinue and our companionship, our virtuous deeds and those of all sentient beings and all the virtuous acts of the three times. All this is offered to the highest objects of refuge. We ask them to accept these gifts gladly and with great joy. In return, we ask that they bless us and protect us from the internal and external defilements and bless us to achieve self-fulfillment in this practice session. We visualize that we make these offerings the enlightened ones and repeat the Mandala offering. When our hands get tired, we place the Mandala on an altar or table that we have provided.

Then we recite the following prayer of Mandala Offering:

EH MA HO!
How wonderful!

JUNG NGAI TENG DU RI RAB RI DÜN DANG
On the basis of the five elements are Mount Meru and the seven golden mountains,

LING ZHI LING TREN CHI NANG DHÖ YÖN CHE
Including the outer and inner preciousness of the four worlds and the eight continents,

NYI DHE GYEN PA JE WA TRAG GYA DHI
Millions of universes, decorated with suns and moons,

DHAG GI LÖ LANG BUL LO ZHE SU SÖL DHAG GI LÖ LANG BUL LO ZHE SU SÖL
Please accept and bless this gift from the core of my heart.

As we recite this prayer, we make the gesture of Mandala offering. After each prayer, we take a small amount of the material out of our lap or table and put it in the big Mandala. We use the Mandala objects at least 108 times, but not more than 324 times. Then we change the materials on the Mandala.

Position of the Hand-Mudra Mandala Darbringungs Mudra

Again for clarification:

You build a big Mandala with the corresponding prayers.

Then recite following prayer for the Mandala offering:

As you recite the prayer, try to make the Mandala Offering Mudra and count the rounds of this prayer with the Mala between the thumb and the base joint of the index finger. After each prayer, take a small amount of the material to be displayed from your lap or table and place it in the large Mandala. For this you use the big Mandala at least 108 times, but not more than 324 times. Then you change the materials on the big Mandala, that is, you solve this and rebuild it. From this prayer you do 100,000 (better 111,111) repetitions.

Resolution

At the end of the practice, all sentient beings become the four objects of refuge and everything dissolves into Shen Lha Ökar. The Lama dissolves into light, which then dissolves in ourselves. Finally, we ourselves and everything in the existing world are transformed into the state of emptiness. We stay there for as long as we are able to. (2 min)
