«Anuloma Viloma» or the «Alternate Breathing» is a breathing exercise for inner balance and mental concentration. «Anuloma Viloma» is the second breathing exercise (Pranayama) in the Rishikesh series. It follows «Kapalabhati», the «Rapid Breathing». After the «Alternate Breathing» and the relaxation, follows the «Sun Salutation» («Surya Namaskar»). «Anuloma Viloma» will be practiced in an upright position and a comfortable sitting posture, cross-legged, kneeling or sitting on a chair. The thumb, index finger and middle finger of the right hand are bent into the «Vishnu Mudra», the ring finger and the little finger remain extended.

Inhale and exhale deeply, close the right nostril with your thumb just above the nostril, inhale for 4 seconds on the left. Close your left nostril with your ring finger, hold your breath for 16 seconds. Open the right nostril, exhale for 8 seconds. Breathe in left for 4 seconds, hold for 16 seconds, and breathe out right for 8 seconds. That was a round.

Effects of Anuloma Viloma

Physically

«Anuloma Viloma» helps to increase lung capacity and bring the breathing under control. The periods of breathing are particularly a good training for the heart and circulation. «Anuloma Viloma» helps to open the nasal passages. This «Alternate Breathing» is excellent against allergies, hay fever and asthma and has a preventive effect against colds. Energetic

«Nadi Shodana» means «purification of the Nadis». All 72,000 Nadis are opened so that the «Prana», the life energy, can flow better. In particular «Ida», «Pingala» and «Sushumna» are opened, solar and moon energy harmonized in «Ida and Pingala». By opening the «Sushumna» the Prana can flow into the higher Chakras. Through concentration, one can send the Prana where one wants it to be.
